I am primarily an abstract artist, working in acrylic and inks, which I favour for their versatility in application and their quick drying time. My preferred tools are a chisel-tipped brush and a palette knife – I love the very fine edges the brush gives and I like the feel of applying paint with a palette knife, as it gives me an instant connection with the movement of the paint on the canvas. The colourful fabrics I saw and purchased during my extensive travels across Africa in my youth inspire many of my abstract designs. Pattern and colour are integral to most of my work – I am particularly interested in repetitive patterns, similar to those reflected in nature. Most of my paintings are uplifting, colourful and bold.
My working methods often involve using idioms and common phrases in an abstract, yet also literal way. I carry a note-book around with me in which I write down phrases that could be used as a title or theme of a new painting. My aim is to create pieces that are bold, full of energy and make the viewer smile.
My most recent works are focused on the three primary colours of red, blue and yellow. I am fascinated by the relationship between these colours and how, just by slightly varying the application of each colour, vast differences can be achieved. I am currently working on a series of mini canvas works complete with easels, aimed at people wanting to buy original art as a gift for someone else.
I work from my studio at home, promoting my work online and via exhibitions. My personal website can be viewed at www.helendavison.co.uk.
